Alabama becomes the second state to postpone high school athletics

Texas was the first state to shut down its high school athletic events, and Alabama is now the second.  Per the Tuscaloosa News, the decision was made after the state's first probable case of
Swine Flu was reported from a Huntsville elementary school.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association has to reschedule the state track and field championships which were scheduled for May 1-2nd.

Twitterers had this to say:

  1. Matt Arnett

SI.com releases its post-spring game football top 25 for 2009

The kickoff for college football season is still a few months away, but the polls are rolling out already.

Per SI.com, Sports Illustrated college football analyst Andy Staples turned out an early Top 25 poll after many schools' played their annual Spring games.

Defending national champion Florida -- whose 2007 Heisman-winning quarterback Tim Tebow returns for his senior season -- tops the poll. Rounding out the top 5 are Texas, Oklahoma, USC and Virginia Tech.

The SEC and Big 12 conferences have the most teams on the poll with five each, followed by the Pac 10 with four.

Additionally, there are four teams from non-BCS conferences ranked -- #11 TCU, #12 Boise State, #17 East Carolina and #19 Utah. The Utes caused controversy within the BCS by remaining undefeated in the regular season in 2008 without playing in the national title game. The poll's release comes as Congress plans to meet on Friday to discuss whether the BCS system for determining a national champion is fair.

College football fans tweeted their thoughts and excitement for their favorite teams:

  1. Crystal Crawford
CrysDawn Longhorns behind the gators? That's crap!
  2. Kyle Dierking
kdierking I talked 2010, but how about 2009. It will be the best year yet for Sooner State football schools. OU and OSU top 10 -- TU can crack top 25.

Hawks Finish off Heat

In another lopsided game, Atlanta ran all over Miami 106-91 to take a 3-2 series lead in their 1st round NBA matchup. This series has been the opposite of the Celtics-Bulls series, which has seen three games go to overtime.

Our guest Tweeter Alex Curtis-Step over at NBATipOff.com finishes off his breakdown of the game and if the Hawks can close it out in Game 6:

  1. NBAtipoff
NBAtipoff 2 win this series, they hawks need more consistency. Both teams have beeb VERY inconsistent, whoever isn't the most wins. Just execute!
  2. NBAtipoff
NBAtipoff If horford's out for game 6, I can say right now they'll lose. The heat will come out hot and the hawks need 2 also b hot, if they wanna win

Hawks-Heat Halftime, the mighty Quinn

If you are a hoops junkie, this time of year feeds the habit.

The Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat are battling in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference 1st round matchup with the series tied at 2.

This series has been the opposite of the nail-biting Bulls-Celtics games--with each team taking turns pounding the other. Game 5 is no different as the Hawks are smoking the Heat at halftime 63-40. Hawks center Al Horford was knocked out with what looked like a twisted ankle. Horford is done for the night.

Our buddy Alex at NBATipOff.com is dropping in a few guest Tweets on Horford's injury and what the Heat need to do to get back in the game:

  1. NBAtipoff
NBAtipoff So, horford hurt, in the locker room.If he's out,O'Neal will have a field day and Solomon Jones will show why he's a bench guy- hope he's OK
  2. NBAtipoff
NBAtipoff Heat game plan for 2nd half: let wade go and score a billion. Maybe he can use chris Quinn's back 2 be more mobile

This begs the question...how is Chris Quinn cashing an NBA paycheck? He looks like a dude I could take.

In the 3rd overtime game of series, the Boston Celtics knocked off the Chicago Bulls 106-104 on Paul Pierce's basket in the final seconds.

Prep star Schuster loses no-hit streak at 4

Mitchell (FL) High School senior Patrick Schuster, who had not given up a hit since March 24, a streak of four straight starts, finally let an opposing hitter get the best of his lengthy left arm.

Per Tampa Bay Online, Schuster gave up a double in the top of the third inning during today's Florida Class 6A-District 7 baseball semifinal, which also ended the Mitchell High Mustangs season after a winning streak of 10 games with a 9-4 loss to Gaither High School.

After gaining national attention (see New York Times) for retiring every batter faced over 28 1/3 innings during the last five games, Schuster will continue his baseball career at the University of Florida, but not before throwing out the first pitch at Tropicana Field before the Tampa Bay Rays May 3 game, per tampabay.com.

The all-time high school record for consecutive no-hitters, six, is held by Tom Engle, who is now a producer at ESPN. Perhaps that's the reason ESPNews carried a pitch-by-pitch account of Schuster's attempt to inch one game closer to history, according to the Lancaster Eagle Gazette.

ESPNews producer and current record holder, Engle, also kept a running log via Twitter on Schuster's performance:

  1. ESPNEWS
ESPNEWS (Bristol, CT) TEngle Prod: Schuster warming up. Looks very focused.1000 people here. media outlets represented. Several MLB scouts in the stands.
  2. ESPNEWS
ESPNEWS Producer: Patrick Schuster is taking the mound! Here we go!

  4. ESPNEWS
ESPNEWS Tom Engel, Prod: After no-no breakup. He seemed to be relieved. Looked as if he could relax and pitch his game after giving up the hit.

Other Twitterers, most near Tampa, expressed their excitement for Schuster's quest:

  1. Matt Rothwell
MattRothwell Watching Patrick Schuster on ESPN, must be weird having a high school game on television.
  2. Brendan McLaughlin
BrendanNews (Tampa, FL) No-hitter spree for young Patrick Schuster is over. Four in a row aint bad, though.
  3. Wesley Linton
weslinton (California) Just watched Patrick Schuster hit a batter in the face. He left the field with a bloody nose. The next batter hit a double.
  4. Mike Rogers
MichaelEmdeyar (Tierra Verde, FL) No no-hitter for Patrick Schuster. It was an unbelievable run. Throws out first pitch at the Trop on Sunday.
  5. Roxanne Wilder
RoxanneWilder (Tampa, FL) All good things must come to an end. Patrick Schuster gives up a double in the third to end his stellar streak.Tonight on Sports Connection

SunSports, a Fox owned and managed regional sports network, posted a TwitPic of Schuster during his pre-game warmups:

Naked Frisbee

No pants, no frisbee.

Per Deadspin, that's the message a group of students in Oregon received from their peers.

The University of Oregon Ultimate Frisbee team
had their season canceled by the student board after they played a recent match sans shirts and pants.

According the the Seattle Times, this isn't the first time the frisbee folks have ran afoul with the law. Keg parties, speeding cars, now nakedness.

The club plans on appealing to the school senate.

What is the Twitterverse saying about these streaking saucer tossers? Quite a bit, as you would imagine:

  1. Ashlyn Gehrett

Mark Sanchez Tweets on Draft Day

First Shaq, then Lance Armstrong, now the Twitterverse gives us Mark Sanchez.

On arguably the biggest day of his life Saturday, the 5th pick in the NFL draft Twittered about his experiences. A lack of experience--he only started 16 college games--was a frequent criticism of the USC quarterback. What you can't knock the guy for is a lack of charisma. His genuine excitement for being a new Jet comes through loud and clear in his Tweets:

  1. Mark Sanchez
Mark_Sanchez J-E-T-S... Jets! Jets! Jets!!! Hello NYC!
  2. Mark Sanchez

Sanchez was a hot name in NFL circles leading up to the draft, and the New York Jets traded up to pick Sanchez.

The Jets actually scooped the NFL, announcing the pick on Twitter before the NFL made the official announcement.

What do Jets fans feel about their new QB? Safe to say they are thrilled. Brett who?
