Pittsburgh Penguins defeat Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1

The Penguins weathered the storm Monday night against Carolina.

Per ESPN.com, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Despite not showing much life early in the playoffs, Penguins Philippe Boucher and Miroslav Satan made their first post-season goals on Monday. NHL's leading scorer in the playoffs, Sidney Crosby, who has accumulated 22 points, was limited to an assist. For the seventh consecutive game, Pittsburgh scored on a power play via Philippe Boucher.

Joe Corvo and Chad LaRose made the Hurricanes' two goals of the night. Carolina has lost Game 1 in each series of the playoffs so far. The team lost Tuomo Ruutu and Erik Cole to unspecified injuries, and coach Paul Maurice did not say whether or not either would play in Game 2.

The Penguins and Hurricanes return to the ice for Game 2 on Thursday.

One Tweeter is hoping the Penguins can keep the championship teams in Pittsburgh:

Monday Night Football booth: Kornheiser out, Gruden in

In a bit of a surprise announcement, Tony Kornheiser has stepped down as analyst on Monday Night Football. He'll be replaced by Jon Gruden, recently fired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The afraid-of-flying Kornheiser said in a statement he was concerned about the upcoming schedule, which he thought to be too grueling.

Gruden joins Ron Jaworski and Mike Turico in what should be a wildly entertaining broadcast.

Still no announcement yet on PTI's Twitter page, Kornheiser's television show, but Tweets are flying this morning about the news:

  1. Derek Ponamsky
DerekPonamsky Jon Gruden on MNF is a great fit. I always thought of him as the next Madden with his Raiders lineage, here ya go. Perfect fit for TV booth.
  2. levitynyc
levitynyc Tony Kornheiser is all class for the grace he is leaving the MNF booth with.
  3. Ben Liebman
benliebman How can we lose TK for Gruden on the MNF booth. It's like going from the muppets to Howard the duck
  4. Eblack
Eblack Hate to say it, because I love PTI, but I'm glad TK is off MNF. He was terrible, quite frankly. (no Stephen A Smith)

That's the first 'Howard the Duck' reference in BTsports history, in case you were wondering. A few members of ESPN's family of analysts Tweet about the booth switch; all aboard the Chucky TV train:

  1. Chris Mortensen
mortreport I know Jon loves to coach but he will be a star in the booth. He will grind in TV prep and bring the personality.
  2. Jemele Hill
    jemelehill Gruden on MNF? Interesting.

Game Log: Orlando Magic eliminate Boston Celtics 101-82 in Game 7

It's elimination night in the NBA. Latest victim: The defending champions Boston Celtics.

Per the Boston Globe, the Magic defeated the Celtics 101-82 Sunday night at Boston to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals to play the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Los Angeles Lakers eliminated the Houston Rockets 89-70 to advance to the Western Conference Finals to play the Denver Nuggets. Both Game 7s today were decided by 19 points.

Not even the timeout cheers from the home crowd were enough to help the Celtics vault pass the Magic, who led most of the game: 27-17 at the end of the first, 45-38 at the half, and again after the third 66-61 despite a buzzer beater from Magic Rajon Rondo. J.J. Redick made Orlando's ninth three-pointer of the game in the third quarter, helping Orlando shoot at a 56 percent clip.

Boston got off to a rocky start in the first quarter with five turnovers and only shooting at 39 percent. The Magic made 5 of 6 three-pointers and shot 72.7 percent from the floor to lead at the end of the period.

The Celtics made a few efforts to come back, including a 10-2 run in the first half and Ray Allen at 20 points at the start of the second. However, by the middle of the fourth quarter five Magic players were in double-figures, led by Hedo Turkoglu with 18 points, a playoff-career high. The Magic led by as much as 31 points with just over 6:00 left in the game. Boston closed the gap to 19 but ran out of time at the end.

--------------------------------------------------------

It's Sunday night and time for another Game 7!

The Lakers eliminated the Rockets earlier today, and now we'll see if the Boston Celtics or Orlando Magic will advance to play the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are perfect in post-season play.

Can Boston clinch Game 7 at home the way they did against the Chicago Bulls? Or do the Magic come onto Celtics' turf and eliminate the home team?
