Greinke, Royals continue surprising start

The Kansas City Royals continued their surprising start with a 3-0 victory Monday night over the Chicago White Sox, improving their division-best record to 15-11.

Long a punchline across baseball, the Royals are now the talk of Twitter-town, and Kansas City fans can be excused for dreaming of bigger things to come.

  1. Rick Johnson
FBBCRev (Blue Springs, Mo.) How about those Kansas City Royals??? I guess the stadium isn't the only thing that is new!!!
  2. Kyle Blaine Parris
kyleparris can't believe the Royals are in first place. Did Brett come out of retirement or something?
  3. richard watkins
showmestater (Missouri) feels so good to have one of your local pro sports teams doing well after sucking for soo long. GO ROYALS!!!

A big reason for the Royals early-season success has been the phenomenal start of pitcher Zack Greinke. Greinke's troubles with anxiety issues have been well-documented, but with his demons under control the 25-year-old pitcher has been lights out. Through six starts, he has a 6-0 record with a sickeningly-low ERA of .40 while leading the league in strikeouts (54), innings pitched (45), complete games (3) and shutouts (2).

@JamesKLight snapped this photo from Greinke's Monday night start against the White Sox.

And across Twitter, Royals and non-Royals fans alike were quick with their praise for Greinke.

  1. Rany Jazayerli
jazayerli I'm speechless. I have been rendered incapable of speech. Do y'all realize if Coco had a better arm, Zack's scoreless streak would be at 59?
  2. Marvin Olberding
unclevermarv (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Happy to see Liriano get his first W, but am becoming more impressed all the time by Zack Greinke's start to the season. Wow.
  3. Doug Hanna
DouHan I keep seeing Zack Greinke's complete games and feeling the Royals are abusing him. Then I see he does that without breaking 100 pitches.
  4. Kirk Biglione
kirkbiglione (Pasadena, Calif.) Zack Greinke is pitching like he's living in the 1970's. Another complete game shutout.
  5. Isaac Rickert
I_R Zach Greinke is awesome. For those of you who do not know, Zach Greinke is piloting the Royals to the World Series
  6. Paul
paulk_ (Kansas City) While I'm a #Rockies fan at heart,I saw a most impressive pitching performance tonight by Zack Greinke!Could the #Royals be this years Rays?
  7. eugenephotoblog
eugenephotoblog (Atlanta, Ga.) How good is Greinke (6-0, 0.40 ERA)? More than 6,500 fans bought walk-up tickets in KC on Monday, pushing the attendance to over 20,000

Pirates lose to Reds, but rare triple play steals the show

The Pittsburgh Pirates flashed some glove against Cincinnati, but the Reds got the last laugh.

Cincinnati starter Aaron Harang went the distance on Easter Sunday, earning his sixth shutout and 12th complete game of his career in a 2-0 victory.

Despite generating no offense, however, the Pirates generated plenty of buzz on defense. With Jay Bruce on first and Brandon Philips on second in the eighth inning, Pittsburgh shortstop Jack Wilson easily snagged Edwin Encarnacion's blooper and quickly threw to second baseman Freddy Sanchez to double up Philips. Sanchez then relayed to first baseman Adam LaRoche to complete the first triple play in Pirates history since 1993.

ESPN has the complete game recap and box score, as well as video of the triple play (embedded below), and the Twitterverse provided plenty of commentary.

  1. doug potter
dpotr (Midwestern US) Serendipity check: Navy pulls off triple play vs. Pirates ; Pirates pull off triple play vs. Reds.

However, the weather is refusing to accommodate baseball fans; home openers for the Chicago White Sox (BTSports) and Boston Red Sox (MLB.com) have already been pushed back a day, while fans elsewhere were forced to bundle up if they wanted to enjoy one of the rites of springs.

@LMDeaton braved the elements to watch the hometown Cincinnati Reds take on the New York Mets.

White Sox Opening Day postponed

Per MLB.com, the Chicago White Sox have postponed their Opening Day game against the Kansas City Royals due to predicted snow accumulation anywhere from 1-to-4 inches during the hours before the game. The pitching rotations will not be altered for the Sox, Mark Buehrle will still make his seventh Opening Day start to tie franchise leader Billy Pierce. Opening Day will occur on Tuesday at 1:05 p.m CT.

The Twitterverse is buzzing about the game being snowed out:

  1. davegolbitz
oyboy (Omaha, Nebraska) Not that I necessarily care about the White Sox (or the the Royals), but it's the principle. Opening Day should not be snowed out.

Braves beat defending champs on Opening Night

On a night of celebration at Citizens Bank Park, the Philadelphia Phillies could not build on the momentum of their World Series run from last October. Per the Philly.com, the Atlanta Braves beat the reigning MLB champions 4-1 on Opening Night of the 2009 Major League Baseball season.

Newly acquired Braves pitcher Derek Lowe threw 8 shutout innings giving up only 2 hits and striking out 4, while Braves veteran third baseman Chipper Jones went 2 for 4 with a double.

The Phillies went a combined 4 for 31 at the plate with 6 strikeouts. In 6.0 innings, starting pitcher Brett Myers gave up 4 earned runs on 8 hits, 3 of them going for home runs. Despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, the Phillies offensive woes continued as Raul Ibanez struck out swinging to end the game.

Twitterers from Philadelphia and Atlanta shared their thoughts on the season opener for these NL East rivals:

  1. Karen Smith
kesmith Braves vs. Phillies. Currently living in South Philly, its best to hide the fact that I was raised a Braves fan.
